Picus viridis - Green Woodpecker

Swifts

This is the largest of the three species ofwoodpeckers that breed in Britain, and it is mainly seen in farmland, parks and occasionally village gardens. Green woodpeckers are lowland birds and, despite their large size, they feed mainly on insects; they are particularly fond of ants, and raid ants' nests in the dry soil at laewn edges and beside rural lanes.
