| First published in 1975,
this book has been among the best-sellers for a quarter of a century
- and deservedly so, for it provides a unique insight into aspects
of trout behaviour and stillwater fishing.
The seamless integration of advice, such as that Brian Clarke
presents on rise forms, with fascinating tales of fishing successes
and the occasional failure is something few writers have ever
tackled with competence; in this Brian Clarke is a master comparable
with Skues and Plunket Greene.
There is nothing dated about this book; even the advice on
leaders - the only 'tackle' topic covered in detail - is as valid
today as it was 25 years ago. But the main emphasis is on the
tactics of reading the rise and fishing in a way calculated to
maximise success with nymphs and dry flies that mimic the creatures
on which lake trout feed.
If you fish for stillwater trout and haven't got an earlier
edition, this reprint of the original will be an invaluable addition
to your angling library (even if your 'library' comprises just this
one book).
