Also commonly referred to as pouting, bib or pout whiting, these deep-bodied members of the cod family are only of interest to anglers as a bait fish, because they are poor to eat.

Pout average around 30cm long, with very large eyes for their size. The Welsh rod-caught record pout, caught off Swansea in 1987, weighed 4lb 1oz (approx. 1.8kg).

Worm baits fished near the bottom in fairly shallow water will usually provide plenty of small pout as bait for a day's fishing.
