Anacamptis pyramidalis - Pyramidal Orchid
The name 'pyramidal' comes from the shape of the young flower spikes of this flower. Once the flower spike is fully developed the flower spike becomes cylindrical or egg-shaped. These bright pink orchids can appear in vast numbers on chalk and limestone habitats but are frequently seen on roadside verges, too. Occasionally pure white specimens occur but this is quite rare. The Pyramidal orchid can be found throughout the UK, Europe, North Africa and Near East. The specimen above was photographed in Portugal in May.
