These beautiful spring wildflowers appear in a variety of colours including red, purple and lavender.

Belonging to the Buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), these plants are the most common of the anemones to appear in the Mediterranean, where they are grown in gardens as well as being found in the wild. They bloom from January to April and can be found on roadsides, meadows and the grassy slopes in the hills.

These specimens were photographed in Crete in April.
