Anemone nemorosa - Wood Anemone

Wood Anemones are among the most abundant and attractive of woodland spring wildflowers.

Wood Anemone

From March to May they carpet the floor of deciduous forests and woods in an attractive blend of mauves and whites. The bell-like blooms often open a pinkish-mauve colour and gradually turn brilliant white. The size of the flower heads is very variable; on the edge of the wood they can be twice the average size of 20 mm diameter when fully open.

The flowers stand out particularly well, because the main leaves do not appear until after blooming is completed. Wood anemones propagate mainly by means of creeping underground stems.
