Aquilegia vulgaris - Columbine

Often referred to merely as Aquilegia, Columbine is the other common name for this flower of late spring and early summer. It loves damp, shady places and is often to be found beside tree-lined country lanes.

Aquilegia

Aquilegia is a native plant, but many of those now seen in the wild are cultivated flowers that have been introduced into the countryside. You might, therefore, see many colours other than the common purple or mauve of the native wild columbine.

Aquilegia

White, pink and blue aquilegia are commonly seen in Wales.

Wildflowers of Wales

This wildflower is one of many dozens that are featured in the First Nature Guide to the
Wonderful Wildflowers of Wales, Volume 1 - Woodland and Waysides.
