Asphodelus fistulosus - Hollow-stemmed Asphodel -(Liliaceae)

Asphodelus fistulosus - Hollow-stemmed Asphodel

Hollow-stemmed asphodel is a smaller, more delicate plant than Common Asphodel (Asphodelus aestivus) with which it is often confused. It flowers from February onwards - slightly later than common asphodel, therefore - and lasts further into the summer, often until June.

Hollow-stemmed Asphodel colonises abandoned and fallow farmland and appears in vast numbers from February to June. This beautiful wildflower of the Mediterranean region is very common in the Algarve, where it can also be found on waysides. It is a member of the Lily (Liliaceae) family.

The specimen shown here was photograved in the Algarve in March.
