Whereas Lesser Celandines are members of the Ranunculus (buttercup) family, the greater celandine is in fact a poppy. They are common throughout the UK and can also be found in Europe.

The first flowers appear in hedgerows, on the edges of woodland paths, and on sheltered riverbanks in April, but it is usually June or even July before these lanky plants make much of a show. They continue blooming until October.
