This flower is one of the earliest to bloom in the Mediterranean region and can often be seen in early February. It is also has one of the longest flowering periods lasting as late as June.

This plant is a member of the Valerianaceae family and is widespread across the western and central Mediterranean region as far as Greece and Crete, and is also found in North West Africa. It flowers in field margins, on abandoned farmland, in rocky places and close to the coast in sandy substrates.

The specimens on this page were photographed in the Algarve region of Portugal in late February.
