Glechoma hederacea Ground-ivy

This low growing creeper is a member of the mint family. It is mainly found beneath hedges, on old stone walls and in deciduous woodland, but any shaded grassy area is likely to contain ground-ivy if the soil remains damp throughout the year.

Ground-ivy

The violet-coloured flowers first appear in March, and ground-ivy continues to bloom until the end of May.

The variegated leaves are a distinguishing feature; indeed, strongly variegated kinds of ground-ivy have been cultivated for use in hanging baskets.

Wildflowers of Wales

This wildflower is one of many dozens that are featured in the First Nature Guide to the
Wonderful Wildflowers of Wales, Volume 1 - Woodland and Waysides.
