Gymnadenia conopsea - Fragrant Orchid

Gymnadenia conopsea - Fragrant Orchid

Not just another 'pink orchid', the Fragrant Orchid can be easily distinguished by its sweet, intense perfume and distinctive flower shape.

The Fragrant Orchid grows up to 40 cm and can pack up to 200 flowers on a single flower spike. This plant favours damp meadows and dune slacks but can also be found on the margins of alkaline fens. They are well distributed throughout Europe and into eastern Asia, China and the Himalayas but are rarely found in the Mediterranean zone..

The specimen above was photographed at the Burren in Southern Ireland in June.
