Lamium album - White Dead-nettle - (Lamiaceae)

This member of the mint family is much more nettle-like in appearance than is its close relative the Red Dead-nettle, Lamium purpureum. The plant is widespread and common throughout the UK and Ireland except in the far north.

White Dead-nettle

White Dead-nettle forms dense patches once it colonises a piece of ground.

Often seen on roadsides and beside paths along rivers in Britain the white deadnettle blooms from May right through until the end of the year.

Each of the flowers contains a tiny drop of nectar at its base.

The pictures on this page were taken in West Wales in May.
