Leucojum trichophyllum - Three-leaved Snowflake - (Amaryllidaceae)

Leucojum tricophyllum

This pretty flower, reminiscent of our snowdrop, appears in southern Portugal and Spain at roughly the same time - December through until the beginning of April. It can be found in dry and sandy habitats and also in abandoned or fallow farmland. The name trichophyllum refers to the fact that it often produces three leaves at the same time as the flowers develop. The flowers are usually white but can sometimes be tinged with pink. It is a member of the daffodil family (Amaryllidaceae).

This specimen was photographed in the Algarve in Portugal in April.
