Lysimachia nemorum - Yellow Pimpernel - (Primulaceae)

This is a close relative of Creeping Jenny, but it has smaller flowers, typically no more than 1 cm to 1.2 cm across. Unlike Scarlet Pimpernel, which thrives in full sunshine, the yellow pimpernel is mainly a plant of shady places, and it does particularly well on tree-lined country lanes throughout the UK and Ireland.

Yellow Pimpernel flowers usually have five petals, but the one above has only four.

Yellow Pimpernel

The first flowers appear in May, but it is usually late June before this plant is in full bloom. You might still find yellow pimpernel in flower as late as the end of August.

Another common name for this wild flower is Creeping Yellow Loosestrife.

The plants on this page were photographed in West Wales in June.
