Narcissus bulbocodium - Yellow Hoop Petticoat Daffodil - (Amaryllidaceae)

One of the delights of spring in the Iberian Peninsula is to see this lovely little daffodil, familiar from our English gardens, flowering in the wild. Depending on the warmth of particular springs this flower can be found from the end of February onwards.

Narcissus bulbocodium

Yellow hoop petticoat daffodil is a native of the Iberian Peninsula, South West France and North West Africa where it is confined to mountain pastures and hillsides - some very steep. It is a member of the Daffodil family (Amaryllidaceae).

This specimen was photographed on a steep hillside in the Algarve in Portugal in March close to Burgau.
