Oenethera biennis - Evening Primrose

Originally from North America, this tallish biennial is now a very common sight throughout Wales. The flowers, which appear from June through to September, are typically 25 to 30 mm across. You will see plenty of these splendid summer flowers on waste ground, beside railway tracks and even on sand dunes; they cope well with dry conditions.

There are several other species of evening primroses, many of which are garden escapes, and they tend to hybridise with the common evening primrose.

Wildflowers of Wales

This wildflower is one of many dozens that are featured in the First Nature Guide to the
Wonderful Wildflowers of Wales, Volume 1 - Woodland and Waysides.
