The white ophrys has a large, undivided lip and is distinguished by its speculum which has a marbled appearance. The plant grows up to 40cm in height and is not too particular about its habitat, growing on both alkaline and acidic substrates. It can tolerate either moist or dry conditions and thrives in either mid-shade or open sunny positions.

This orchid is known to occur in Italy, in the Aegean, and in Crete. In Italy it is known to hybridise with Ophrys apulica, sometimes forming large hybrid swarms.
The plants pictured on this page were photographed in Crete in early April.
