Potentilla anserina - Silverweed - (Rosaceae)

This plant is common and widespread throughout the UK and Ireland. It is also common in many northern and central European countries including Slovenia where we saw a lot of it growing in the Triglav National Park.

Silverweed

This creeping member of the rose family spreads by means of runners that root at leaf nodes. Its leaves are often silver on upper and lower surfaces early in the year, and the underside of the leaves often remains silver.

Tormentil flower and leaf

Silverweed loves damp places, and is often to be found on cliff walks or beside country lanes where the soil is heavy.

The flowers, typically 2 cm across, first appear in May, and Silverweed can sometimes be found in bloom as late as September.

The pictures on this page were taken in West Wales in June.
