The rose family includes not only the dog rose of the hedgerows and burnet rose of sand dunes but also many fruit trees including apples and raspberries and a large number of wild flowers that on cursory inspection you might not expect to find in this family. Characteristics of the Rosaceae include alternate leaves, usually pinnate, and flowers usually with five petals.
