Great Burnet is an impressive plant and grows to around a metre in height. Each deep, blood-red flowerhead has many tiny, closely packed flowers. Its territory is in decline due to habitat destruction, and it is mainly found in the southern half of Britain and through the middle part of Ireland.
This member of the Rose family grows in damp meadows and along stream and river banks. It flowers from June to September.
The specimen shown on this page was photographed in East Anglia in July.
