As the name monophyllos suggests, this flower appears from a growth of only one leaf. It is a fairly common find in lightly wooded areas of Portugal, southern Spain and Morocco. In Portugal it can be found in the almond orchards, many of which have now been abandonded in favour of cheaper imports of almonds from other parts of the world. This wildflower can be seen in bloom from March through to around May; it is a member of the Lily family (Liliaceae).
This specimen was photographed in the Algarve in Portugal in March.
