Silene dioica - Red Campion

Red campion - close-up of flowers

This splendid plant of hedgerows and riverbanks is much loved for its dense flower masses that last all through the summer. The five-petalled flowers are typically 1.5 to 2 cm across and occur in various shades of pink.

Red campion

The first flowers appear in mid-May, and from then until September or early October you will find plenty of red campion in bloom. This wild flower is usually at its best in June and July.

Wildflowers of Wales

This wildflower is one of many dozens that are featured in the First Nature Guide to the
Wonderful Wildflowers of Wales, Volume 1 - Woodland and Waysides.
