Silene dioica - Red Campion - (Caryophyllaceae)

This lovely wildflower of roadsides is found throughout the UK and Ireland. It is also found in many northern and central European countries.

Red Campion

A splendid plant of hedgerows and riverbanks, Red Campion is much loved for its dense flower masses that last all through the summer. The five-petalled flowers are typically 1.5 to 2 cm across and occur in various shades of pink.

Red Campion

The first flowers appear in mid-May, and from then until September or early October you will find plenty of red campion in bloom. This wild flower is usually at its best in June and July.

The pictures on this page were taken in Pembrokeshire in West Wales in June.
