This campion is widespread throughout the UK and Ireland but only common in the southern regions.

Unlike Silene latifolia and Silene dioica which are commonly found on the edges of damp woodland and on roadside verges, this plant found on dry, calcareous grassland. It has drooping flowers and greyish leaves, but it is the calyx which forms a large, veined bladder that gives it its common name.
Silene vulgaris flowers from June until August.
