Spotted rockrose is rather closely related to the many cistus plants that appear in the Iberian Peninsula; it is a common find along waysides and field margins. This wildflower is very variable in appearance, which can make identification rather problematic at times.
Spotted rockrose is a member of the Rockrose family (Cistaceae), and it produces impressive carpets of flowers from February until June.
This specimen was photographed in the Algarve in Portugal in May.
