Orange-tip Butterfly - Anthocharis cardamines

The male orange-tip butterfly is immediately recognisable by the distinctive orange sectors on the wing tips.

Females lack the orange colouring but the greenish patterning on the underside of the hindwings of both males and females is an aid to identification.

From early April until mid June these meadow butterflies seek out cuckooflowers - Cardamine pratensis - (milkmaids or lady's smock are alternative common names) and other members of the Brassicaceae or cabage family.
