Peacock Butterfly - Inachis io

Buddleias are magnets for these large an imposing butterflies of gardens, wasteland and railway embankments. The wing eye-spots are a scary deterrent to wouold-be predators.

Peacock butterfly

Peacock butterflies spend the winter as adults, hiding in dark corners in buildings; black undersides to the wings make them hard to spot in such places.

Catterpillars of the peacock butterfly
