Common Blue Butterfly - Polyommatus icarus

The Common Blue is rather less common than it used to be. In Wales you will find these pretty little insects on waste land and roadsides from April through until September.

The males have a distinctly violet tinge with orange markings near the edges of their wings. Females of this species are paler and lack the orange markings, but they vary considerably in the amount of blue colouring on their wings.
