Calybites phasianipennella

Phylum: Arthropoda - Class: Insecta - Order: Lepidoptera - Family: Gracillariidae

Calybites phasianipennella

This moth is difficult to identify accurately because two forms exist with various intermediates between the two.

Calybites phasianipennela lays its eggs on various plants which provide food for the larvae. It flies from September onwards and then over-winters as an adult.

Their habitat is damp open ground where there is plenty of rank plant growth.

The wingspan of the Calybites phasianipennella ranges between 10 and 11mm.

Distribution

In Britain and Ireland this moth is more common in the south. It is widespread but localised.

Lifecycle

The lavae 'mine' the leaves of the food plants and then subsequently form conical leaf-rolls in which they feed in later instars. The adults fly in September and then some over-winter, appearing again the following spring.

The larval foodplants of Calybites phasianipenella are Docks, Loosetrifes and Knotgrass.
