Pseudotsuga menzesii - Douglas Fir
Named after the man who brought it to Britain from America, the Douglas fir is a fast-growing source of valuable timber and is grown throughout Wales. The straight trunk makes it ideal for telegraph poles, pit props, fencing and flagpoles.
These trees can reach a height of more than 50 metres, but most are harvested at the age of 50 to 70 years - long before they reach their full size.
The cones fall intact and have long, three-pointed bracts. |
