Short-toed Eagle

Juvenile, Sagres

If you see an eagle hovering then it is a Short-toed, a specialist in catching snakes. It is one of the more frequently seen large raptors in the Algarve in summer and is easily identified by its pale underparts and darker, ‘hooded’ head. Somewhat surprisingly in view of its favoured diet, it is an early migrant, arriving in late February and is common on autumn passage.
