Kingfisher - Alcedo atthis

Pictures - John Foss

The Kingfisher sits patiently on a branch or reed waiting for a small fish to come along and then dives with remarkable accuracy to catch it. They are mostly spotted as a dazzling flash of colour as they fly up the river when disturbed. The specimen on this page was photographed at Quinta da Lago.
