Great White Egret1

Twenty years ago the Great White Egret was a rarity in Portugal. Since then, its spread over the Iberian peninsula has been remarkable and it now breeds in heronries close to Lisbon. In the Algarve it is a regular visitor outside the breeding season in small numbers. Castro Marim nature reserve, the Tavira salt pans, Ludo, Vilamoura and Lagoa dos Salgados are all sites where it may be found.
