Short-eared Owl 1

The Short-eared Owl is a winter visitor that sometimes hunts during the day though is more often seen just before dusk in casual, buoyant flight as it searches for a small rodent meal. It is an owl of grass- and wetlands and its presence in the Algarve is somewhat erratic, decidedly scarce in some winters but more frequent in others, depending on food availability in more northern parts of Europe.
