Cattle Egret - Bubulcus ibis

Pictures - John Foss

This member of the Heron family is found in the tropics, subtropics and warm temperate zones. They are common and widespread throughout the Algarve where they stalk grazing cattle in order to feed on the insects that are disturbed as the cattle move around the pastures. The specimens on this page were photographed at Praia Da Rocha, Vilamoura and Castro Marim.
