Goldfinch - Carduelis carduelis

Pictures by Ray Tipper - More about Ray...

If the Goldfinch were rare, it would, for birdwatchers, be one of the most sought-after birds in Europe. Its widespread presence across the whole of the Algarve, however, does nothing to diminish its beauty. Males and females, although very similar in appearance, are separable by the extent of their red face masks. Outside the breeding season, Goldfinches form small flocks and roam open land in search of their seed diet.
