Azure-winged Magpie - Cyanopica cooki

Pictures - John Foss

This lovely relative of the Common Magpie was once scarce in the Algarve, but in recent years the numbers present have increased dramatically and the Azure-Winged Magpie is now a common sight throughout the region. Look for them rooting about on the trunks of palm trees when the dead leaves have been removed, or in parks, woodlands and gardens. The specimens on this page were photographed around Vilamoura.
