Black-winged Kite - Elanus caeruleus

Pictures - John Foss

The Black-winged or Black-shouldered Kite, hovering over open grassland or perched on poles or other manmade structures, is still a relatively common site in the Algarve, or in the rolling countryside around Mertola which is just over the border in Alentejo. The stunning photographs below were taken near Cabanas.
