Common Waxbill - Estrilda astrild

Pictures - John Foss

This beautiful bird was originally introduced to Portugal near Obidos and is now widespread along the littoral of the Algarve. With its broad red eye band it is unmistakeable, and can be found in long grass and rank vegetation in where it searches for its food which mainly consists of seeds and insects. The specimens on this page were photographed at Praia Da Rocha and Cabanas De Tavira.
