Bee Eater - Merops apiaster

Pictures - John Foss

In keeping with their common name, Bee-eaters live on bees and wasps making this beautiful bird very unpopular with the Algarve's numerous bee-keepers. These summer visitors to the Algarve arrive from Africa in spring and are a common sight around the Alvor Estuary where these specimens were photographed.
