Greater Flamingo - Phoenicopterus roseus

Pictures - John Foss

The Greater Flamingo's diet includes small aquatic crustaceans, molluscs and insects which it constantly filters through its huge bill. They prefer a habitat comprising large bodies of shallow water such as salinas (saltpans) inland lakes and coastal lagoons. They tolerate both saline and brackish water. The specimens on this page were photographed at Alvor Estuary, Lagoa dos Salgados, Ludo and Cabanas saltpans.
