Avocet - Recurvirostra avosetta

Pictures - John Foss

This graceful bird inhabits coastal lagoons and estuaries feeding on worms and aquatic insects by sweeping its elegant up-curved bill from side to side in the water. The specimens on this page were photographed at the salinas (saltpans) at Cabanas de Tavira.
