Pleurotus species (oyster mushrooms) and allies vary onsiderably in cap colour, shape and size, so it is important to inspect all physical characters (features) before drawing any conclusions about their identification.
The family Pleurotaceae includes the genera Pleurotus, Hohenbuehelia and a few other less well known genera such as Acanthocystis and Geopetalum, whose species are rarely encountered on fungus forays in Britain and Ireland and so they are not currently featured on this website.
For more information about Pleurotus fungi and a deeper insight into the ecology and structure of species featured in our Pleurotaceae Gallery pages, please see Pat O'Reilly's latest book Fascinated by Fungi.
