This common moth is widespread throughout the UK.

Scrobipalpa costella is a late emerger and is on the wing in September. It overwinters as an adult.

The wingspan of Scrobipalpa costella is around 15 mm.

The adult moths are nocturnal and on the wing from September onwards. They occur in woodland rides and hedgerows where Woody Nightshade, their food plant, occurs.

Distribution

Found throughout the UK and in western Europe.

Lifecycle

The larvae feed on Woody Nightshade and mine the leaves creating small dark patches.
